Normally, as food passes through the esophagus to the stomach, the sphincter opens to let the food pass through. Then it closes immediately after in order to prevent acid from the stomach from traveling into the esophagus.
However, when the sphincter does not properly close, the stomach acid, has the opportunity to travel into the esophagus, creating the burning pain of acid reflux.

Fibroids are very common and, most of the time, grow without creating any symptoms. However, for some women, fibroids can cause severe symptoms, ranging from heavy bleeding during their periods to pelvic pain and pressure and painful sex.
If a fibroid grows large enough, it can even begin to put pressure on the abdomen. This pressure can cause gas and bloating, difficulty urinating or other symptoms. If pressure from the fibroid makes it difficult for the sphincter to work correctly, it can also cause acid reflux.

Women who want to manage their acid reflux should avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages. They should steer clear of acidic foods such as citrus and tomatoes. It’s important to sit up for a while after eating, to encourage the food to travel to the stomach.
